This session provides an introductory overview of lighting design concepts. This content is primarily intended to help roadway designers get better acquainted with the basics of lighting design as shown in the FDOT Design Manual (FDM), Standard Plans, and Standard Specifications. This presentation begins by explaining the justifications for installing lighting at various locations on the state highway system. We’ll then discuss some important design considerations with a quick walkthrough of FDM 231 for Lighting, including the goals of photometric design. Finally, we’ll review the circuit design concept with a step-by-step example for light poles.
